Rainy backup

Rainy day custody time activities

Rain can erase the plan fast, especially when you only get so much time together. This free Together Ready guide was built for parents and caregivers so a weather change does not turn kid time into a scramble.

Start with the basics

Before choosing activities, check dry clothes, shoes, towels, snacks, and whether you need a grocery stop. Rainy days get easier when everyone is comfortable first.

Pick one table activity

Good table ideas include card games, drawing prompts, sticker scenes, puzzles, kid-safe baking prep, comic strips, or building a snack board together.

Simple plan

Make a rainy-day mission board

This gives the day a little structure without turning it into a schedule you have to police.

  1. Write three boxes on paper: move, make, reset.
  2. Let each kid add one idea under each box.
  3. Pick one move idea first, then one make idea, then one reset idea before dinner or drop-off.
  4. Cross off what you actually do and leave the rest as backup. The leftover ideas are not failures.

Pick one movement idea

Indoor movement can be simple: hallway bowling, pillow obstacle course, dance playlist, balloon volleyball, or a cleanup race before dinner.

Pick one outside backup

Choose a rainy-day place before everyone gets restless: library, bookstore, indoor playground, bowling, community center, or a low-key lunch spot.

Optional supplies

Useful rainy-day supplies

Rainy-day backup works best when the supplies are simple, low-mess, and easy to stop. Start with what you already have.

Make

Washable marker and paper kit

Works for mission boards, comic strips, rainy-window drawings, menus, and quiet reset prompts.

Move

Soft indoor ball or bean bags

Useful for hallway bowling, target toss, laundry basket games, and quick energy resets.

Reset

Simple card or board game

Best for a calm block after movement, before dinner, or when the weather keeps everyone inside.

Build a weather-aware checklist
