Lily was almost asleep when she heard three tiny taps on her window.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

She opened one eye.

At the window stood Princess Willow, her leafy crown glowing softly in the moonlight. Beside her was Rallo, holding his magnifying glass upside down and looking very serious.

Which was tricky, because Rallo was wearing a leaf on his nose.

"Lily," whispered Princess Willow, "Gigglewoods needs our help tonight."

Rallo nodded so hard the leaf fell off. "A mystery!" he said. "A very mysterious mystery. Possibly the most mysterious mystery since I lost my snack and found it in my hat."

Princess Willow gave him a gentle look.

Rallo smiled. "Right. The Moonbell is missing."

Lily sat up quickly. Every night in Gigglewoods, the Moonbell rang one soft, silvery note. When the animals heard it, they knew it was time to curl up in nests, burrows, branches, and blankets.

But tonight, no bell had rung. And without the Moonbell, Gigglewoods was wide awake.

Princess Willow reached for Lily's hand. "Come along, Fairy Helper in training."

Lily smiled. She was still learning what a Fairy Helper did, but she knew one thing already: Fairy Helpers showed up when someone needed help.

The room shimmered. The stars outside her window stretched into a glowing path, and in one blink, Lily was standing beneath the tall trees of Gigglewoods.

Rallo held up his magnifying glass.

"I found our first clue!" he announced.

Stuck to the glass was one tiny silver thread.

Lily leaned closer. "It looks like moonlight."

Princess Willow touched it gently. "Moonmoss. It only grows near the sleepy side of the forest."

"Then to the sleepy side!" Rallo cried.

He took one big step, tripped over a mushroom, rolled down a soft hill, and landed in a patch of flowers with a poof.

"I meant to do that," he said.

Princess Willow helped him up. "Rallo, maybe this mystery needs slow feet."

Rallo brushed petals from his hat. "Slow feet. Fast brain. Got it."

They followed the moonmoss trail until they reached a circle of moonflowers. Each flower was closed tight.

Rallo squinted through his magnifying glass. "Aha! The flowers are hiding the Moonbell."

He poked one flower. Nothing happened. He poked another. Still nothing. Then he poked a third flower, and it sprinkled silver dust all over his nose.

"Achoo!" said Rallo.

Lily giggled.

Princess Willow smiled. "The flowers are not hiding the bell. They are pointing."

Lily looked carefully.

Princess Willow turned to her. "This is part of becoming a Fairy Helper. When something feels confusing, look again. What do you notice?"

Lily studied the moonflowers. Every single one leaned just a little to the left.

"They're all leaning the same way," Lily said.

Princess Willow nodded. "Exactly."

They followed the leaning flowers to a narrow path between two trees.

At the end of the path, they found a small bridge over a quiet stream. The water made a soft sound.

Drip-drop. Drip-drop.

Rallo held up his magnifying glass again. "I see tiny footprints!"

He hurried forward, then stopped.

The footprints went in circles.

"Oh," said Rallo. "Either our mystery creature was confused, or it was dancing."

Lily knelt down beside the footprints. "Maybe they were looking for something."

Princess Willow's eyes warmed. "That is good Fairy Helper thinking."

Rallo leaned down too, but his hat slipped over his eyes.

"I am also thinking," he said from underneath the hat. "I am thinking it is very dark in here."

Lily lifted the hat off his face.

Then she heard it. A tiny sound. Not the stream. Not the wind. Not Rallo whispering, "Please be a snack clue."

It was a little sniffle.

Lily pointed toward a hollow log near the bridge. "There."

Princess Willow lifted her lantern, but the inside of the log was too dark.

She looked at Lily.

"This is your Fairy Helper moment," Princess Willow said. "When someone is scared, we do not rush in. We make the dark feel smaller."

Lily held the lantern carefully.

"Should I shine it high, low, or right in the middle?" she whispered.

Rallo raised one paw. "I vote for everywhere all at once."

Princess Willow smiled. "Gently, Rallo."

Lily took a slow breath and held the lantern right in the middle.

A warm glow filled the hollow log.

Inside sat a tiny fox kit with big worried eyes. Beside the fox kit was the Moonbell.

Rallo gasped. "Aha! The bell-napper!"

The fox kit tucked its nose under its tail.

Princess Willow shook her head softly. "Not a bell-napper. A little one who was scared."

The fox kit sniffled. "I borrowed it. I thought if I kept the Moonbell close, I wouldn't feel afraid of the dark."

Lily sat beside the log. "Sometimes I like having a light close too."

Rallo lowered his magnifying glass. "Sometimes I sleep with three acorns, a button, and half a cookie."

Princess Willow looked at him.

Rallo blinked. "For safety."

The fox kit gave a tiny smile.

Princess Willow picked up the Moonbell. "The bell belongs to all of Gigglewoods. But you do not have to be brave by yourself."

Lily had an idea. "What if we walk back together?"

Princess Willow nodded. "That is what Fairy Helpers do. They do not just find the problem. They help someone take the next step."

Rallo puffed up proudly. "I can lead the way."

He took one careful step. Then another. Then another.

"No rushing," he whispered to himself. "Slow feet. Helpful brain."

Together they carried the Moonbell back to the clearing. Princess Willow hung it from the silver branch where it belonged.

The fox kit stood beside Lily. Rallo stood beside Princess Willow. Lily stood very tall, because tonight she had helped like a real Fairy Helper.

Princess Willow rang the Moonbell.

Ting.

The sound floated through the trees like soft silver light.

All across Gigglewoods, little eyes grew sleepy. Wings folded. Tails curled. Blankets tucked under chins.

Princess Willow began softly.

"Goodnight, Moonbell."

Lily smiled and whispered, "Goodnight, silver leaves."

Rallo yawned. "Goodnight, mushrooms. Sorry I rolled into you."

The fox kit tucked into its den. "Goodnight, little lantern."

From the branches came sleepy chirps. "Goodnight, feathered friends."

From the burrows came tiny sighs. "Goodnight, cozy creatures."

The moonflowers closed their petals one by one. "Goodnight, moonflowers."

Rallo's eyes drooped. "Goodnight, emergency cookie."

Princess Willow raised one eyebrow.

Rallo patted his pocket. "Just in case."

Lily giggled.

Then Princess Willow, Lily, Rallo, and all the sleepy animals whispered together:

"Goodnight, Gigglewoods."

When Lily opened her eyes, she was back in her room, tucked beneath her blanket.

At the window, one silver leaf shimmered in the moonlight.

And far away, or maybe very close, Lily heard the Moonbell ring one last gentle note.

Ting.

She smiled, because she knew all was well in Gigglewoods.

And now, at last, everyone could sleep easy.
